If you are starting to explore music it's helpful to know about pulse and rhythm. They're the foundations to every song. In this post, we'll give a brief explanation of pulse to get you on your way!
The word 'pulse' is used to describe a steady beat that underpins music, like a ticking clock (the good old analogue ones!) or a heartbeat. Sometimes the pulse can be heard clearly, and at other times it can be more difficult to hear. If you ever tap your foot as you listen to music, then it is likely that you have identified the pulse!
Check Your Musical Pulse Awareness:
Here's a short activity to check your own musical pulse awareness. Listen to this piece of music by the Beatles. Tap your foot to the pulse (if you think it can be heard). Do you feel the pulse of the music is strong, weak or absent?
Now listen to this version of the song, which has the emphasised the pulse so you can hear it clearer.
Did the pulse clapping match your foot tapping? If your answer is yes, then well done - your pulse awareness is at the right place. If your answer is no, then don't stress - keep trying!
Did You Know....?
There are other names used to describe pulse as well. In jazz music, pulse is sometimes referred to as the groove, and in popular music, pulse is referred to as the beat.
That's all for now!
