The Musical Alphabet: A Quick Explanation

Just like we have the English alphabet that helps us to read and write words, stories and more – there is also a musical alphabet that helps musicians to read, write, and play music.


What is the Musical Alphabet?

In western music, the musical alphabet is formed of 7 letters that repeat over and over again:

Each letter of the musical alphabet represents a musical pitch which can be written on the line and spaces on the stave.



This means that instead of saying the letters, you either sing it or play it using an instrument.


No matter which instrument you learn, you’ll always be able to play the notes from the musical alphabet. Listen to notes A to G on the guitar, violin, and the piano:
